Diogo Dias

Diogo Dias was a Portuguese explorer who is best known for his role in the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. He was born in 1450 in the Portuguese city of Lagos and was the son of Bartolomeu Dias, a famous explorer who had already made a name for himself in the exploration of the African coast. Diogo Dias was the youngest of three sons and was educated in the same manner as his brothers, learning navigation and seamanship.

Diogo Dias first set sail in 1482, joining his father on an expedition to explore the African coast. The expedition was successful and they were able to map the coast from the Cape of Good Hope to the Gulf of Guinea. Diogo Dias was also able to explore the islands of the Azores and Madeira.

In 1487, Diogo Dias was chosen to lead an expedition to explore the African coast further. He was accompanied by his brother, P�ro Dias, and a crew of ninety men. The expedition set sail from Lisbon in August of 1487 and sailed south along the African coast. After a few months of sailing, they reached the Cape of Good Hope in November of 1488. Diogo Dias was the first European to reach the cape and he named it the �Cape of Storms�.

The expedition continued to explore the African coast and eventually reached the Indian Ocean. Diogo Dias and his crew were the first Europeans to reach the Indian Ocean and they were able to map the coast from the Cape of Good Hope to the Gulf of Aden.

Diogo Dias and his crew returned to Portugal in 1490 and were welcomed as heroes. Diogo Dias was given a pension and a coat of arms by King John II of Portugal. He was also given the title of �Admiral of the Indian Ocean�.

Diogo Dias continued to explore the African coast and in 1497 he was part of an expedition to India. The expedition was led by Vasco da Gama and was the first to reach India by sea. Diogo Dias was able to explore the coast of India and was able to map the route from the Cape of Good Hope to India.

Diogo Dias died in 1520 and was buried in the Church of St. Francis in Lisbon. He is remembered as one of the most important explorers of the Age of Discovery and his legacy lives on in the many maps and charts that he created.
